BDC Key Performance Indicator Web Part

Categories:

As part of helping you all make the most of the Business Data Catalog I'm really happy to announce the first of our BDC web parts, the Business Data Catalog Key Performance Indicator Web Part.

The problem with the KPI web part that comes with MOSS 2007 is that you can only look at BDC data by pointing the KPI web part at a SharePoint list with a business data column added. The data in the business data column does not automatically update from your line of business system, you have to actually click the refresh button in the list to get it to do that. So in our opinion the out of the box KPI web part was showing almost static data. The image below shows the refresh button you must click before your KPI data will update.

The Business Data Catalog Key Performance Indicator Web Part is different as it goes directly to your line of business system through the Business Data Catalog to get the data. This means if you refresh your KPI web part, it shows the latest data.

You can find out a lot more information about the web part, including a screen cast over at the LightningTools.com web site:

http://www.lightningtools.com/Pages/bdc%20kpi%20web%20part.aspx

We've also decided to give all Professional Users of BDC Meta Man a free license for the BDC KPI Web Part worth $400.00, so if you want to make the most of the BDC you can now get the tool and the web part packaged together!

We've got some more BDC web parts coming out over the next couple of weeks. If you've got an idea of how you'd like to make use of your business data in your organization please do drop me an email at nick@lightningtools.com

BDC Meta Man – the end?

Categories:

Microsoft has launched an updated SDK today and as some people have already seen it includes a new tool for creating/editing BDC application definition files. A number of people have already asked me a few questions so rather than answer them all individually a good old blog post seemed the best way.

1, Are you going to kill yourself now?

  • Definitely not. I have two little kittens and Sophie to look after now J

Back in May 2006 Microsoft said they weren't going to bring out a tool to create application definition files and were hoping third party tool providers would fill that gap. We feel BDC Meta Man has done that, but for whatever reason Microsoft have changed their minds and are releasing a tool. We always thought MS would release a tool for the next version of SharePoint so we knew that BDC Meta Man may only have a shelf life of 3-4 years, but after evaluating we thought it would be both interesting and worth our time. We've certainly not made our money back financially from the tool yet but it's been an amazing learning experience taking a software product to market.

Are we annoyed with Microsoft? Of course, but it's their business to change their mind and I'm sure this won't be the last time they will impeach on a tool provider. What does it mean for us? We just have to work harder and keep improving BDC Meta Man!

2, Are you going to stop working on BDC Meta Man now?

  • As you can probably already tell most definitely not. While the MS BDC tool is now available and free, after using it for a short while I am very confident that there is still a need for BDC Meta Man. Sure the MS tool will help people who've previously been using notepad to create application definition files, but to use it you still require an in depth understanding of the BDC meta data model which from building BDC Meta Man I know is not straight forward without studying the SDK for a long time!

The aim of BDC Meta Man has always been to allow users to create the application definition files without having to learn the meta data model, and we'll continue to work hard to make it easier for everyone.

3, Why didn't Microsoft buy BDC Meta Man from you?

  • We had one discussion with MS about them purchasing a worldwide license of BDC Meta Man and so allowing it to be free to everyone. We were happy to go ahead but after going back to them two weeks later they had decided to release what you see now.

4, Why will people still need BDC Meta Man?

There are many reasons we feel BDC Meta Man will still be useful to many people

  1. Automatic generation of Finder methods for databases
  2. BDC write back
  3. Native support for SQL Server stored procedures
  4. Drag and drop UI for creating associations.
  5. Simple, and Intuitive drag and drop interface for creating associations.
  6. Continual releases. Generally we've released a new version of BDC Meta Man every 2 weeks making new features available to you. We've got some exciting stuff planned so keep watching
  7. Free support for BDC Meta Man customers. Although the MS BDC tool is free, you'll need to pay for MS support. You could post on the MSDN BDC forums of course, but you'll be lucky to get someone from MS give you an answer there (we're on there though providing support!)
  8. Slicker UI. We feel our user interface is a lot slicker than the MS BDC tool user interface. As I've already explained you still need to understand the BDC meta data model to make use of the BDC tool.
  9. Free Support via Email directly from SharePoint MVP's and BDC experts.
  10. Guaranteed future upgrades for free.   Oracle Write back, Stored Procedures and Views are already in development with a planned upgrade within the next few days.

So the work will continue. We have MS as a free competitor, and a competitor that copied our UI, but we'll still keep working to make the BDC easier to use for you! We'd love to hear your feedback, both on the MS tool and BDC Meta Man. Feel free to send it to nick@lightningtools.com

SharePoint MVP book out!

Categories:

I'm very proud to announce that the SharePoint MVP book which I contributed a chapter on the Business Data Catalog to is now out!

You'll notice that there is a picture missing from the front page and I'm afraid that picture is mine! I didn't get round to getting them a good picture in time! Completely my fault and I must apologies to the publishers and other MVPs as they did chase me for it.

Well this is one of my ambitions achieved! Always wanted to write something in book format and now I've done it. After writing a single chapter would I write a whole book? I don't know…it was certainly a lot harder than writing a blog post mainly because of the annoying word templates and macros they get you to use. Anyway who knows what the future holds. Perhaps I'll write a fiction book next time J 'Death by SharePoint' or something along those lines?

As I mentioned above my chapter is on the Business Data Catalog. For people who've been keeping up with my blog here and BDC Meta Man, you might not learn to much extra on the BDC as my chapter really summarizes everything I've learnt over the past two years. Don't let that stop you getting it though; I've already learnt a ton of stuff from other chapters such as Adam's on Securing SharePoint and Jason's on Information Rights Management. All the chapters cover the best practice way of doing things as well, so if you're in doubt on how to attempt WCM or customizing and branding SharePoint have a read of Andrew, Heather and Shane's chapters.
